Monkeypox
Monkeypox is a viral disease that has been declared a national public health emergency. All members of the Bearcat community are encouraged to learn about symptoms, protective measures, and what to do if exposed.
Monkeypox is a virus like smallpox, but milder. It is not commonly seen in the United States; however, several cases have been reported in Hamilton County.
Monkeypox Symptoms
Monkeypox usually presents with a pimple-like rash and fever along with several of the following symptoms:
- Headache
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Exhaustion
- Back ache
- Chills
- Muscle pain
- Exhaustion
How Does Monkeypox Spread?
Monkeypox is spread from person-to-person in several ways:
- Direct contact through touch
- Respiratory secretions spread during face-to-face and intimate contact
- Touching items such as clothing or linens that have been exposed to Monkeypox rash or body fluids
- Pregnant people can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta
