Overview of Curricular Practical Training

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an essential component of experiential learning for F-1 status holders in the United States. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations, as outlined in 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10), CPT allows F-1 students to engage in practical work experiences related to their academic programs. This can include both paid and unpaid positions.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for CPT, F-1 students must:

  • Complete one academic year (30 weeks) of full-time study in lawful immigration status in the U.S.

  • Exceptions include:

  1. Graduate students required to complete experiential learning in their first year.
  2. Experiential learning conducted outside the U.S. for foreign-based employers.

Authorization for CPT

All CPT experiences, whether in the U.S. or abroad, must be authorized by UC International Services on your I-20 form. Unauthorized participation is a violation of F-1 status.

  • CPT within the U.S. or for U.S.-based companies abroad: Requires I-20 form authorization.

  • CPT for non-U.S. employers abroad: Does not require I-20 form authorization, but submission of the Curricular Practical Training eForm is necessary.

CPT Authorization Process

  1. Register with UC International Services: All experiential learning, paid or unpaid, must be registered.
  2. Submit the Curricular Practical Training eForm: Use the iBearcatsGlobal system before starting any CPT opportunity.
  3. Course Registration: Enroll in the appropriate course during the CPT semester (e.g., 0 credit hour co-op, capstone course).
